How to create a bootable USB to install OS X 10.9 Mavericks

This is how to simply and quickly create the setup files of Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9 on USB with the built-in tolls in Mac. Next, choose Contents -> Shared Support -> double-click on the file InstallESD.dmg to mount such file into a virtual drive.

By this method, you need to make the hidden files available to manipulate, open Terminal and run the following command below:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool YES;\killall Finder;

Open Disk Utility, choose Restore tab and follow these steps:

  • Source: press Browse then find the BaseSystem.dmg file (if not found, drag such file into Source box)
  • Destination: click right mouse button into USB to allocate the movable hard drive which you want to create the setup file on, then choose Set as destination

Press Restore and wait (for about 1-2 minutes).

After completion of Restore process, open USB, you will see the files as below:

Choose System -> Installation -> Delete Packages folder (alias).

Then, access to the above-mentioned mount drive, copy and paste the whole Packages folder into the same location of the deleted alias file.
